About the Team
The founders of The PermaDontics Center, Dr. Joel S. Berger, D.D.S., M.D. and Dr. Ian Aires, D.D.S have over 55 years of combined service in their respective fields. Their award-winning, groundbreakingleadership in the fields of Oral Surgery and Prosthodontics have been recognized worldwide. Always committed to excellence, they have worked tirelessly over the last fifteen years to refine and perfect their innovative dental implant procedures.
Dr. Joel Berger, D.D.S., M.D.
Dr. Joel Berger is a renowned physician who has dedicated his career to developing the most effective, efficient and safest possible techniques in outpatient oral surgery. His specialties are outpatient maxillary and mandibular osteotomies.
International expertise
Dr. Berger is internationally recognized for his expertise in general oral surgery, dental implantology and the surgical treatment of sleep disorders.
A well-known speaker and author, Dr. Berger regularly accompanies Dr. Aires in presenting their joint research on immediate function dental implants. He recently presented with Dr. Aires at the Friadent Symposium 2003 in Germany. He was also co-author of the immediate function dental implant research paper recently published in the International Journal of Implant Dentistry.
Dr. Berger is a professor at the University of California, San Diego - Division of Plastic Surgery, as well as the Secretary of the California Coalition of Cleft and Craniofacial Center.
Education
Dr. Berger holds both his undergraduate and doctorate degrees in dentistry from McGill University, (Montreal, Canada). He also holds a doctorate degree in general medicine from the University of Washington (Seattle).
After completing his doctorate degrees, Dr. Berger entered the oral and maxillofacial surgery-training program at the University of Washington to complete his general surgery, and oral and maxillofacial training. He then spent a year in Europe doing a fellowship at two major centers in both Holland and Austria. Finally, in 1981, after one more year of advanced training at McGill University, Dr. Berger began his practice in San Diego.

Dr. Ian Aires, D.D.S.
Dr. Ian Aires is one of the leading prosthodontists in the world specializing in immediate function dental implants. Practicing in San Diego, California since 1981, he has over 25 years' experience in prosthodontics and implant restorations.
Dr. Aires continues to dedicate his career to making the accelerated dental implant solution, A Certain Smile, more and more widely available to patients. Currently the President of the San Diego Prosthodontic Society
Original research
Over the past eight years, Dr. Aires and his team led a groundbreaking pilot study on the immediate function dental implant procedure of placing cemented crowns on dental implants in one visit. Results showed 100% success of the cemented bridges.
Dr. Aires regularly presents his research findings on immediate function dental implants to dentists and patients throughout the world. His original research was recently published in the prestigious International Journal of Implant Dentistry (published in 70 countries and read by over 20,000 dentists). Additionally, Dr. Aires was one of 10 expert panelists chosen from around the world to present his research at the 2001 Immediate Loading Expert Meeting in Athens, Greece. Also last month, Dr. Aires presented his research at the 10th International Friadent Symposium in Germany. He will present again in December at the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAMS) Dental Implant Conference in Chicago, Ill.
Innovator
Dr Aires' interest in prosthodontics led him to establish the San Diego Prosthodontic Society in 1985. This group of prosthodontists is focused on innovating procedures for the restoration of missing or badly broken-down teeth. Methods being used include fixed bridges, implant-supported teeth, and full and partial dentures.
Education
Dr Aires earned his doctorate degree in dentistry from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, followed by two years of advanced graduate training at the Boston University - School of Graduate Dentistry.

Bruce Carlquist, Master Dental Technician
Following in his father’s footsteps as a dental technician, Bruce has worked on thousands of cases throughout his 30 year career - including cases that other dental technicians felt were too difficult to work on. During this time he has operated his own full service dental lab providing a range of services including implant supported fixed bridges, custom dentures, porcelain laminates, inlays, onlays and all porcelain crowns. Bruce is considered one of the most skilled fabricators of replacement teeth in the world.
Bruce has also been involved in lecturing to Dentist’s on the latest implant technical services available. Bruce has always had an enthusiastic desire to learn the latest state of the art dental techniques and is thrilled to be able to run the in house lab for the PermaDontics Center. He has been involved from the conception, helping to design the laboratory layout and order the state of the art equipment.
